Born in 1878, the multi-talented Cohan was an entertainer, playwright, composer, lyricist, actor, singer, dancer and producer. Known as 'the man who owned Broadway' in the decade before World War I, he is said to be the father of the American musical comedy. The song 'The Yankee Doodle Boy' (also known as 'Yankee Doodle Dandy'), based on an old Revolutionary War number, was Cohan's trademark piece.
